Communication from Cantwell: Igniting Discovery and Innovation Through Undergraduate Research
Dear Aggies,
At Utah State University, we are guided by a commitment to curiosity, exploration, and a drive to make a positive impact in the world. Nowhere is this more evident than in our undergraduate research programs, where our students confront real-world challenges with passion and creativity, supported by the expertise and mentorship of our dedicated faculty.
We’re celebrating 50 years of undergraduate research at Utah State in 2025, and its impact is transformative. It teaches students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and communicate clearly — skills essential in an ever-changing world. I’ve been inspired by the achievements of our undergraduate researchers during my time as an Aggie.
As a land-grant institution, USU emphasizes research that benefits our communities. Many undergraduate projects focus on sustainability, water conservation, and renewable energy — fields vital to Utah’s future. These efforts tackle pressing issues with the potential to develop solutions to preserve our state’s natural beauty and resources.
Our Carnegie R1 “very high research activity” designation underscores the transformative power of research. By engaging in research, students gain confidence, critical thinking skills, and the ability to articulate complex ideas. When students present findings, they learn not only how to defend their ideas but also how to grow from constructive feedback. They carry these lessons forward as they become leaders and innovators in their fields.
Undergraduate research at Utah State is about more than advancing academic understanding — it’s about preparing leaders for tomorrow. It is a chance to pursue excellence, embrace creativity, and inspire others through their curiosity and drive to make a difference.
Our commitment to research and innovation continues to grow. With each new discovery, each project completed, and each student transformed by the experience, we are reminded of the power of education and the impact of curiosity and commitment. I invite you to celebrate the achievements of our undergraduate (and graduate) researchers and encourage future generations to continue exploring, discovering, and innovating.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth R. Cantwell
