Campus Scene: Weeks of Welcome

USU students hold lanterns during the university's Luminary event during Weeks of Welcome.

Few things on the Utah State University campus indicate that fall is on the horizon more than the trickle of students turning into a full-on torrent. As summer wanes and the campus population explodes, the new arrivals are met with a barrage of events unmatched for the reminder of the academic year — Weeks of Welcome.

Yes, you read that right. Weeks. Plural.

The annual campus kickoff runs through the first two weeks of the fall semester and includes events like Day on the Quad where more than 300 on- and off-campus vendors fill the iconic center of USU’s campus with information booths, food, and an overwhelming abundance of prizes and giveaways.

“Weeks of Welcome is a long-running series of events and activities that continues to be loved by students,” explains Kevin Webb, director of leadership for USU’s Student Involvement and Leadership Office. “It’s a great way for them to gather with new friends, make memories, and relax a little during the busyness of those first few weeks of the semester.”

This year’s iteration paired the popular Big Agg Show, a multi-band outdoor music festival sponsored by Aggie Radio 92.3 FM, with the HURD’s annual campout on the Quad in preparation for Utah State’s first home football game of the season.

The fun continued in Week 2 with a movie on Old Main Hill as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days entertained the masses. The ensuing day, the women’s soccer team delivered in the “Battle at the Bell” as the Aggies throttled No. 13 BYU, 4-0, in front of the stadium’s first-ever sold-out crowd.

Other highlights of the week included High Stakes Bingo, Poetry and a Beverage (PoBev), a color run, Glow in the Dark Disco, and various other events.
